PREVIOUS CHAPTER: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

A story of two high school boys learning how to take care of an injured kitten.

It’s not like they haven’t been sleeping together before. Wei WuXian had dropped by Lan WangJi’s house for a few times, most of them out of the need to brainstorm for their group projects. And whenever they did, Wei WuXian would end up staying over, especially if the next day was a weekend and there’s no need for them to attend school. As of now, Wei WuXian had already treated Lan WangJi’s house ー or more precisely, Lan WangJi’s room ー as his own. He knew where Lan WangJi kept his clothes, his toothbrush, his toothpaste, and he knew where Lan WangJi kept his extra pillow too. So since Lan WangJi gave him the yes, he’d cheered and helped himself around the place and had slipped into the bathroom before Lan WangJi was done tidying up the bed for them to sleep.

“Lan Zhan, can you lend me your pyjamas?”

Lan WangJi’s hands froze in the midst of putting out another pillow for Wei WuXian. He stared at the bathroom door, knowing that Wei WuXian was taking a shower. It’s not uncommon for them to share clothes either. Besides, their body sizes were pretty much the same. Lan WangJi walked over to his wardrobe and took a piece of pyjamas out of it. He knocked on the bathroom door. It opened quickly, a wet hand slipped out of it, almost hitting Lan WangJi on his face.

“W-Where… ah, got it! Thanks, Lan Zhan!”

Lan WangJi merely stood rooted on the spot as the door was closed again, his face damped with shower water, his hand damped as well, and he could still smell the scent of jasmine that he knew was from his own shower gel.

Wei WuXian snuck under the blanket when he came out of the bathroom, only to have Lan WangJi dragging him out of it, earning him a pout.

“Your hair is still wet,” he said.

“But I’m so sleepy…” Wei WuXian trailed.

“You sit,” Lan WangJi said, already walking away to get the hairdryer. “I’ll blow it dry for you.”

Wei WuXian broke into a radiant beam. “I knew Lan Zhan is the kindest person in the entire world!”

Lan WangJi said nothing. And soon, the silence between them was replaced by the noise from the hairdryer.

“Where’s Fluffball?” Wei WuXian asked.

“Slept,” Lan WangJi said.

“Oh, you made the bed for it too?”

“It has its own bed,” Lan WangJi said. After a pause, he continued. “It’s not sleeping with us.”

“Why not?” Wei WuXian asked.

Lan WangJi turned the hairdryer off and put it away. “Sleep,” he said, without answering Wei WuXian’s question.

Wei WuXian searched around with his eyes, grinning when he saw the small bundle wrapped in a tiny bed before he rolled under the blanket again, joining Lan WangJi on the bed.

“Lan Zhan, tomorrow…” Wei WuXian mumbled.

There’s a small space between them; there’s still fragrance of the shower lurking in between them. And the more Wei WuXian spoke, the more he seemed to be rolling towards Lan WangJi.

“En,” Lan WangJi said, deadpan.

“You… You don’t have to wake up with me,” Wei WuXian paused for a yawn. “I’ll go home first to change and then… go to school by myself.”

“With the cat?” Lan WangJi asked.

Wei WuXian peeked a sleepy eye open before he poked Lan WangJi on his arm.

“Can I leave it with you first?”

“And then?”

“Then you bring it to school…”

Lan WangJi turned to look at him, “We should not bring it to school.”

“Wei Ying?”

He’d fallen asleep.

Lan WangJi sighed mutely. Turning to one side, he flicked the lights in the room off and laid facing the ceiling.

He can’t sleep for a long time; the only thing he could hear was Wei WuXian’s soft breathing as he came close to him, almost hugging him to sleep if Lan WangJi hadn’t been pulling another pillow over and wedged it between them, having Wei WuXian to hug the pillow instead.

The next day when he woke, Wei WuXian was already gone. The cat was still in the room, he really didn’t bring it along with him.

Lan WangJi got out of bed and walked towards the window, just in time to see Lan XiChen pulling into the gates. Luckily Wei WuXian left earlier. He didn’t even want to imagine how awkward it’d look like if his brother caught Wei WuXian attempting to escape from his window again. While he stared, Lan XiChen had noticed him too. He waved at him and smiled before he locked his car and paced into the house.

Not long after, Lan WangJi heard him knocking on his door.

“WangJi, is everything okay when I wasn’t around?” Lan XiChen asked.

Lan WangJi nodded.

Lan XiChen smiled and took something out of his pocket. It’s two lockets carved beautifully with cloud moire patterns.

“Souvenir for you,” Lan XiChen said.

“Why is there…” Lan WangJi started.

“Oh, another one is for WuXian. By the way, I saw him leaving in your pyjamas earlier. Did he stay over yesterday night?”

Lan WangJi was stunned. He thought Wei WuXian would at least change before he left. He was about to answer his brother when the kitten purred softly from the corner of his room, looking like it had just woken up.

“Hm? Is that a cat…?” Lan XiChen noticed.

Lan WangJi stared in horror as Lan XiChen peeked into the room. Their family had forbidden them from rearing pets of any sorts, as Lan QiRen thought that it’d become distractions especially for Lan WangJi when he should be focusing on his studies instead of having to bear a responsibility to look over a cat.

Lan XiChen was quick to find the cat though. He looked at it, eyes warm, before he turned to Lan WangJi again.

“Did WuXian bring it over?”

Lan WangJi could only nod. Lan XiChen, however, smiled.

“Don’t let uncle find out,” he said.

“En, I understand,” Lan WangJi said. And then, after a quick pondering, he continued. “Brother, will you be at home today?”

“I just came back from a project so I’m allowed to take a few days of break. I should be staying in for today. Why do you ask?” Lan XiChen said.

Lan WangJi walked towards the cat and took it over to show it to Lan XiChen. The kitten didn’t seem at all unreceptive towards his brother; it stared at him with bright eyes, even looking like it’s curious of the new person.

“Can you… help me take care of it for the day?” Lan WangJi asked.
