A story of two high school boys learning how to take care of an injured kitten.
They stood in the centre of the street, still holding hands. Even when a few students walked past them they spared their stunned expression no attention, their entire focus on each other.
Lan WangJi seemed to have used the whole of his guts just to say the last of his words. Wei WuXian was already pretty anxious himself when he thought he’d said the wrong thing but Lan WangJi was just as anxious. He wasn’t one who knew how to speak the right words, let alone knowing how to express his thoughts and feelings. Growing up, he’s the most comfortable with Wei WuXian aside from his family members. They’d grown up in such a comfortable proximity that everything felt natural; meeting each other every day, having Wei WuXian to bring him food every day, having Wei WuXian to sleep overnight in his room once in a while, and even things like closing an eye on the fact that he’d just brought a kitten to school the day before. All of them felt so natural it’s as if they were born to be together.
That’s why, Lan WangJi had never thought of finding another person. He never thought of wanting a different friend, nor did he ever want a girlfriend. He’s fine with Wei WuXian.
He only wanted Wei WuXian. He only needed Wei WuXian.
And that’s why, when Wei WuXian broke the question at him, he faltered. Why should this be a question in the first place? Doesn’t Wei WuXian feel the same too? Does Wei WuXian feel like this natural friendship they share was something awkward or unnatural for him that had probed him to ask the question? Or was Wei WuXian bored of him already, so bored that he wanted Lan WangJi to act differently or he wanted a change in their seemingly routine lifestyle?
Lan WangJi never asked; he never deemed there’s a need to ask. Because it’s always Wei WuXian who was approaching him that had given him the idea that this was what Wei WuXian wanted.
He thought Wei WuXian might feel the same. He really thought so until that very thought wavered now when Wei WuXian suggested that he might need to find a girlfriend, and that he might have someone else as a best friend or whatever that’s not him.
Yet, it was also because Wei WuXian had asked him those questions that it occurred to him ー he wasn’t prepared to have another person entering his life, replacing Wei WuXian.
He didn’t want to imagine life without Wei WuXian.
Wei WuXian was still staring at Lan WangJi in shock, as if he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard. The longer the time flowed between them, the more Lan WangJi felt his insides acting up. At long last, when he can no longer endure the tension between them, he attempted to pull his hand out, just for Wei WuXian to grasp it tighter, the same way Lan WangJi had done to him.
“L-Lan Zhan,” Wei WuXian breathed.
Lan WangJi can’t even bring himself to look at him. He’s sure his ears were very red now, if the painful heartbeats beneath his chest served as any indication at all to his rampaging emotions.
“You… Just now, you…”
Wei WuXian’s voice was close by his ears. He’d lost all his courage to say anything by now. But Wei WuXian was in agony himself. He too cannot endure the tension and before he knew it, Wei WuXian was holding him tight on his shoulders, forcing him to look at him.
“Lan Zhan, look at me,” Wei WuXian said, his voice no less stern than how Lan WangJi spoke to him earlier.
“Were you… serious when you said that?”
“I am the person you like? I’m the Wei Ying you’re referring to, right? You only know one Wei Ying, don’t you? Is it,” he stuttered, swallowing down his throat to contain his emotions. “Is it me? D-Do you… like me?”
Lan WangJi was breathing heavily himself, his fingers trembling a tad from the swarm of emotions. He never thought he’d blurted it out loud like that but what’s done was done; there’s no turning back. Wei WuXian had heard it loud and clear. And besides, it’s all Wei WuXian’s fault. If he wasn’t the one who approached him like they’re the best of friends in the entire world, if he wasn’t the one who held his hand then told him that he only wanted to hold his hand, and if he wasn’t the one who told Lan WangJi that he’s coming for him, then Lan WangJi would probably won’t let things slip so easily like this. All the pining he held for all these years, all the deceptions he thought succeeded, and all the small gestures he thought Wei WuXian wouldn’t notice; all of them were lost in vain now.
“It’s your fault!” he erupted, totally out of his own conscious. He froze, Wei WuXian froze too, clearly didn’t expect that reaction. But in the next second, Wei WuXian broke into a glimmering grin and held Lan WangJi on the face instead.
He gave Lan WangJi a loud, rough kiss on his lips. Lan WangJi turned into a statue right away, totally confounded by what had just happened.
“Me too! Lan Zhan, me too!” Wei WuXian exclaimed. He was filled with so much joy in his face that even his hands cupping Lan WangJi on his face were shivering with excitement. “I like you too, Lan Zhan! Not just like, I like you very, very much! I love you! I want no one else but you!”
Lan WangJi was shaking by now. He hoped he had the strength to push Wei WuXian away but at the back of his mind, he knew that he didn’t really want to do that anyway. Rather, he wanted to bring Wei WuXian over and hug him so tight he couldn’t bring himself to move as if that would help in soothing his tension.
And that’s what he did; his body moved faster than his mind.
“Your fault!” he repeated, practically growling. Wei WuXian wasn’t even struggling when he’s embraced by Lan WangJi; he chuckled, he returned his hug, he was so happy he can’t even be bothered by how intimate they were now, under broad daylight, out on a public street where people were still passing by.
“Yes, yes, my fault, it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t be seducing you in the first place. But why are you so shy? It’s not like I didn’t already steal your first kiss when you’re threー”
Lan WangJi could take it no longer. Squeezing Wei WuXian on his chin with a strength that was sure to crush his bones if he wasn’t holding it back, he pressed his lips against Wei WuXian’s lips, biting him on his lower lip when he’s done with the raw, savage kiss.
