NOTE: Modern AU; High school students Lan WangJi x Wei WuXian; both 15; light-hearted slice-of-life.
A/N: Daily update until the end of the story.
A story of two high school boys learning how to take care of an injured kitten.
As expected, the canteen was already crowded with hungry students who were all crashing towards the counter where the day-exclusive buns were sold like a pack of starving wolves. Wei WuXian stalled his steps at the sight. Frowning a tad, he dragged Lan WangJi over to sit on a vacant seat away from the crowd.
“Lan Zhan, I’ll buy for you. You sit here first,” he suggested.
“En,” Lan Zhan said with no hesitation whatsoever.
Wei WuXian chuckled, “How come you agree so fast to it? You usually have something to say about things I decide.”
Like during brainstorming, during discussions. Not arguments, per se. But more of suggestions.
At his words, Lan Wangji simply said, “No use forcing myself on things that’s not my speciality.”
Wei WuXian laughed out loud. “You’re right. Okay then.” He tapped Lan WangJi on the tip of his nose before he said, “Let gege get you some food. Be a good boy and wait here, alright?”
Wei WuXian wasn’t one who’s interested in the day-exclusive bun either. He could eat anything he can find in the canteen, be it a bowl of noodles or a plate of rice, or just snacks. But ever since that day when Lan WangJi came to him with a day-exclusive bun in his hand, he changed his mind. If Lan WangJi liked it, then he’d get it for him.
Even if it meant having to squeeze his way through the crowd, fight with sweating people, and share glares with the person who’d gotten their hand on the last piece of the bun, that’s all fine.
He never liked to fight for food with someone else, but if it’s for Lan WangJiー
ーthen he’d fight for Lan WangJi.
Lan WangJi was sitting by himself, eyes hovering on the overly clean table when a bun was slipped under his eyes. He looked up, expecting to see Wei WuXian, just to see that it’s not him, but Wen Ning.
“P-Prefect Lan, Wei-ge asked me to give this to you.”
He stared at Wen Ning for a bit, then tilted his gaze to the bun on the table.
“W-Wei-ge also asked me to pass a message,” Wen Ning continued.
“What message?” Lan WangJi asked, attention returning to the man before him. Wen Ning looked like Lan WangJi had just given him a discipline warning because he looked even more timid than usual, gulping down his throat before he spoke again.
“Heー He said, if you open this now, that means you… you…”
Lan WangJi waited, he didn’t press on but as far as he knew, when Wei WuXian came to do something like this, it’s usually to tease him, so he wasn’t at all surprised nor confused with Wen Ning’s reaction either.
Wei Ning swallowed down his throat again, “That means you… you l-like him.”
Lan WangJi heaved a sigh. He responded with a quiet ‘en’ and took the bun over. But he didn’t open it. He left it on the table and stared at it without doing anything else. Wen Ning stood awkwardly, unsure if he should leave or wait for Lan WangJi to do anything at all but thankfully, Wei WuXian came for his rescue right after.
“Wen Ning, thank you! You’ve done such a great job! Here, here, give you one too,” he said, stuffing one of the buns into Wen Ning’s hands.
Wen Ning panicked and shook his head, pushing the bun back to Wei WuXian.
“It’s okay, Wei-ge, I-I’ll go now.” With that said, he throttled out of the way.
Wei WuXian chuckled at the sight of his escaping back before he came to sit right opposite Lan WangJi. The grin had faded from his face, replaced with a pout instead.
“You don’t like the bun?” he asked.
Lan WangJi raised his head, meeting eyes with Wei WuXian. Right in front of his face, he picked the bun up and tore the packaging open, out of Wei WuXian’s utter surprise.
“I like you,” he said out loud, before he took a bite on the soft texture of the bun.
Open it now, and it means you like him.
Wei WuXian gaped at him for a while before he broke out into a burst of laughter. He laughed for a long time and throughout the entire time, Lan WangJi simply ate without another word, seemingly flustered from what he’d blurted out of impulse earlier, his ears red, his eyes avoiding Wei WuXian’s own pair of eyes.
And then, he felt Wei WuXian’s hand on his face, causing him to stop eating.
“Since when did you become so bold, Prefect Lan? But next time, when you try to flirt with me, better tell me first. My heart cannot handle it.”
Wei WuXian’s expression was gentle when he looked at Lan WangJi; he touched him like he’s caressing some sort of treasure and it did nothing but softened Lan WangJi’s heart.
“En,” he could only bring himself to say.
He heard a yelp and then, before he knew it, Wei WuXian had leapt towards him and gave him a flying kiss with a ‘muah!’, one that’s just enough for Lan WangJi to make out loud and clear in their close distance. It’s not as indecent as an actual skin-against-skin kiss but still.
“Lan Zhan, I like you too!” He’d spoken out loud, much to the astonishment of people around them, who’d stopped their steps out of shock and were looking at them with stun written all over their faces.
Lan WangJi wanted to say something along the lines of ‘shameless’ but then he met eyes with Wei WuXian, then his lips, before those words trundled back down his throat and the next thing he said was nothing that had to do with what he wanted to retorted Wei WuXian in the first place.
With a finger, he brushed against the small wound on Wei WuXian’s lower lip.
“Sorry,” he said. “Does it hurt?”
“Hm? Oh, the wound? Nah, it’s just a bite, nothing serious. Lick it a few times and it’ll heal by itself,” Wei WuXian said nonchalantly.
This time, Lan WangJi properly spilled the word he wanted to say, “Shameless!”
“What’s so shameless about licking my own lipー oh, you thought I wanted you to lick it for me? Hahahahaha! I never thought about that! But okay! That sounds like a good idea! If you want, I can let you lick however you want, how about that?”
Lan WangJi can never win Wei WuXian when it came to words. Unable to say anything else, he slipped his hand into his blazer’s pocket and pressed something onto the table in the next moment.
“What’s this?” Wei WuXian asked. Of course he knew what it was; it’s a packet of biscuits. But what he’s more interested in was, why is Lan WangJi giving him a packet of biscuits?
Lan WangJi wasn’t answering; he pretended as if he’s busy eating the bun Wei WuXian bought for him, as if he didn’t hear his question. But Wei WuXian didn’t need him to answer. He could tell just from his reaction that Lan WangJi must have brought it for him in exchange of how he always brought food for him too, knowing Wei WuXian wouldn’t have food to bring for the both of them now that the parents weren’t around.
Warmth surged from within him as he grinned to himself, joy erupted in his guts, he felt as if he’s surrounded by pink bubbles that were popping all over his ears.
“Thanks!” he said, decided that since Lan WangJi was so nice to him, it’d make him feel bad if he kept teasing him.
But right before he could tear the packaging of the biscuit open, Lan WangJi finally spoke,
“Open it now and it means you like me.”
Wei WuXian’s hands froze in the midst of his action.
